[2011-09-12] Wu Chun's Interview At Shaw Lido, Singapore

Wu Chun during our interview session.

Wu Chun in the zone

By Naseem Randhawa

Wu Chun arrived in Singapore last week to promote his latest movie "My Kingdom" which he stars with alongside Barbie Hsu and Sammo Hung. In conjunction with his arrival in Singapore, an exclusive screening was also arranged for his fan club, where they had the opportunity to watch the movie and meet the 31-year-old budding star. Wu Chun arrived at the packed Shaw Lido around 9pm for a short stage appearance where he waved and greeted his throng of screaming fans. Not wanting to miss the opportunity, Cinema Online managed to catch the popular heartthrob for a one-on-one interview and here's what he had to say:

Cinema Online interview with Wu Chun conducted on 12 September at Shaw Lido, Singapore.

Q: What is your most memorable experience during the filming of "My Kingdom"?
Wu Chun: It was the scene when we started to avenge our master and fought with Yu Rong Guang (Master Yue). We shot that scene for 3 days without much sleep. It was quite exhausting, but none of that compared with Sammo Hung. He even fainted at the filming set due to exhaustion. After he regained his consciousness, he still continued with the filming. We were influenced by his drive, and even if we were tired, we didn't feel it as much.

Q: How is your character in "My Kingdom" different from the previous characters you've played?
Wu Chun: The characters that I played in the past were more introverted and cool. I chose this character as I want the audience to see a different side of me. This character is more arrogant and open. Also, this movie is about Peking Opera, and I learned a lot from filming, it was something really different for me.

Q: You are someone who would apparently take some time to get along with a stranger, so how did you and Han Geng bond so well in this movie?
Wu Chun: Actually Han Geng is quite an introverted person. And my character in the movie plays his elder brother, so I had to take more initiative. And with the character's open personality, I had to change my mind set to initiate communication with him.

Wu Chun meets his fans that come with flowers and gifts for him.
Q: You had an intimate scene with Shizuka Inoh, can you share your experience on that with us?
Wu Chun: It's a new experience. But I learned that no matter how bad or how wicked the character is, it is just a character in the movie. So I don't really feel embarrassed or what so ever

Q: What have you been busy working on currently?
Wu Chun: I am busy filming a new movie "Saving General Yang" directed by Ronny Yu who made Jet Li's "Fearless". It is quite a big production and I play one of the main casts, in the star-studded movie that includes Ekin Cheng, Raymond Lam, Jai Jai (Vic Zhou), Adam Cheng, and some actors from Mainland China.

Q: Will you continue to pursue roles in the martial arts genre?
Wu Chun: It depends. I can accept other genres as well, but martial arts attract me a little bit more (laughs).

Q: Since this is the first time you are collaborating with Han Geng, Sammo Hung and Barbie Hsu, is there anything interesting that you would like to share with us?
Wu Chun: In this movie the brotherhood between Han Geng and me is rather deep, so there's a need to build that relationship. I really appreciated Sammo Hung for sharing his story on his friendship with Jackie Chan. He mentioned that they can hold hands on the street and they can even shower together. Their relationship is so close. Therefore Han Geng and me are supposed to resemble them in the movie.

"My Kingdom" is now showing in Malaysia & Singapore!

Fans Fight Over Wu Chun's Autographed Pillow

Wars have broken out over the smallest of things. But friends tussling over an autographed cushion?
Yes, that's the kind of fervour Taiwan-based actor-singer and former frontman of boy band Fahrenheit, Wu Chun, seems to inspire in his local supporters.
The heart-throb was in town from Sunday to Wednesday to plug his new idol drama Sunny Girl, which airs over Channel U on Saturdays at 9.30pm.
And 11 of the 200 who attended a fan meet at the Ritz Carlton hotel on Tuesday got to participate in three games with their idol.
One of them was a Q&A segment where they had to answer questions which revealed how much they knew about the 31-year-old.
The fans were picked based on whether they were lucky enough to catch the autographed cushions he threw into the crowd.
That was when the "fight" started.
Student Benjamin Lim, 17, was spotted trying to grab the prized item that his female friend had already caught.
The tussle went on for what seemed like 30 seconds and although Benjamin was grinning, his friend looked shocked.
He told The New Paper sheepishly: "We are friends and I was actually teasing her and trying to take the cushion away when the photographers swarmed in.
"It was embarrassing."
Benjamin's friend in question, Ms Jonelle Kwan, an administrative assistant in her 20s, added: "I actually didn't know he was joking at first so I was quite surprised (that he was trying to take it away)! But he clarified it with me later, so now we're fine."
But if she wasn't a friend, would Benjamin have really fought for that cushion ?
He insisted: "Although I'm a fan of Wu Chun, I'm a guy after all. It's not very gentlemanly of me to fight with girls."
However, the emcees of the event - Y.E.S 93.3 DJs Dennis Chew and Nico Chua - weren't aware of the misunderstanding and ended up wrongly picking Benjamin to go on stage instead of rightful owner Ms Kwan.
So did she feel bitter about missing her chance to get up close with Wu Chun?
She said: "I'm okay with it. I suffer from stage fright, so I didn't want to go up anyway." Ms Kwan eventually took the pillow home.
Benjamin said with a laugh: "I felt quite nervous to be standing near Wu Chun. I started to idolise him only two years ago. He's quite muscular and very good-looking."
The eventual winner of the Q&A game, Jacinda Hoon, a 15-year-old student, earned the nickname "Nasi Lemak Girl" from the DJs because she bought a packet of nasi lemak for Wu Chun after he revealed in a live webchat the day before that he hadn't yet sampled that local culinary favourite.
Jacinda told The New Paper: "He initially told me to keep it for myself but I insisted on giving it to him.
"I feel excited thinking about him eating the nasi lemak I bought. I just hope that I left a good impression and he'll remember me."
Before the games, the DJs teased the fans by asking them how close is "too close" while moving nearer to their idol.
And Wu Chun joked: "Why don't you sit on my lap? Is that close enough for you?"
And while she didn't get that close, this lucky fan had her own "intimate experience" when she was fed a strawberry by the hunk.
Student Vanessa Lim, 19, got fed twice because he insisted that the first bite was too small.
She recalled excitedly: "I was very happy and my mind went blank! No words can describe how excited I was."
But perhaps the most hardcore fan had to be saleswoman Hui Ying, 34, from Taiwan who came to Singapore for the event and made a holiday out of it.
This despite the fact that she had fractured her ankle and her right foot was in a cast.
She said: "My leg feels better now and it's not a big deal. As long as it's within my ability, I will do it. The most important thing is to support him."
Concerned
The first thing Wu Chun did after walking on stage was to ask the gathered fans if they had eaten.
He even scheduled, at the last-minute, an early celebration of his 32nd birthday at the event.
And he turned up for a fan meet on Sunday evening even though he was sick.
The event, at Bugis Junction, attracted a crowd of 2,000.
The first 150 in line, plus another 50 from his fan club, got to go on stage to receive a rose and a poster from Wu Chun and 10 lucky winners who were picked by Y.E.S 93.3 got an additional "prize" - to lock eyes with the heart-throb for a full 10 seconds.
Student Joreen Soh, 19, was one of the lucky 10. She gushed: "My mind was totally blank! I was very nervous.
"He has a very 'prince charming' look and he's really gorgeous!"

Wu Zun Misunderstood "My Kingdom" As A Warrior Script.

Recently, Wu Zun said in an interview with DaBao, that play in the "My Kingdom" was interesting,he said that he played the role but at the beginning he mistakenly believed that "My Kingdom" is kind of depicts the effort of "Strong Warriors" on Battlefield. He then slowly learned about the Opera. In "My Kingdom" Wu Zun has acted from their clothing, from make-up to the words and deeds have lamented the high standards and admits that he played great in the process of "My Kingdom" and is very enjoyable.

"Kingdom" Mistaken As "Holy Warriors"

Wu Zun said that he grew up in Brunei, so he did not know what the opera is actually . So in the film "My Kingdom" before, Chun had thought that the "My Kingdom" refers to the kind of fighters on the battlefield, very strong self-righteous people who refer to martial arts. He was still thinking again how to play such a "holy warriors", with perfection. When picked up this movie, I got the real opportunity to learn. I realize I misunderstood the original meaning Takefu. In the crew a lot of professional opera born actor who, Wu Zun often referred for their opinion, in practice, they also have been observing them, Wu Zun and said he often surf the Internet to check some information, then repeated to see some of the prior opera-related film, from which he got to understand the opera. Then the audience was fortunate to see  My Kingdom originally thought was "Holy Warriors", Wu Zun, transformed into a real Takefu (warrior).

Oily Head, Heavy Makeup

Wu Zun thinks that script in "My Kindom" and Warriors are alike,  to do everything as Takefu(warriors) see themselves pushed to the most tight, most extreme, and trying to do everything well. For the Opera, Wu Zun had to maintain his oil hairs, heavy makeup. Peking Opera makeup takes a long time, every detail has to be taken care of, if not careful then, on the big screen it is easy to find flaws.

Wu Zun said that the opera makeup each time took nearly an hour or two, he rarely had an opportunity to have this kind of make up, so this film was particularly fun, you can try different things, so often self-timer. But also "can not afford to get hurt" because of the makeup is not easy, can not move, can only use a straw to drink water. Cleansing is even more difficult, Wu Zun still remember the first time that the makeup did not get off entirely, cannot afford to go back with that face.

Not only the heavy  make-up was on the requirements but also many of the martial arts and Wu Zun did not come in contact of any of them before, there are many with a combination of opera, like using Huaqiang. Wu Zun has learned sword play before, but not the Huaqiang (as for double knife sword) and as Huaqiang, such weapons is not easy to start with, then after getting familiar with it "Very Satisfied."

As Fahrenheit Go Their Own Ways, He Became Bit Lonely

Chen Sun Hua had styled more than 200 artists, including Fahrenheit, Huang Xiaoming, Li Bingbing, F4, Jay Chou, Jolin Tsai, Stefanie Sun, JJ, Luo, SHE, Elva, Mei, Rainie, Coco Lee, Sammi Cheng, Karen Mok, Cyndi and many others. She talks about Aaron Yan in this Exclusive Article.

"Queen Mother" To help for "Prince Aaron"
I am 45 years old, don't think Aaron and I can play together. For Aaron,  I and "legs sister" Chen Sixuan, and previously followed him "like a nanny as" Agent Jiazhen, doing advertising the company's public relations ... ... a bunch of character completely take people to get together, outside tubes(world) we were called "the Queen Mother To Help."

Under caring of Us, Aaron status was not high enough(interaction with outside), and sometimes see him deal with the media is not good enough, or going on errands, we will together go and criticize him, criticize him, read him to understand. He is the younger generation, sometimes I would talk to him by way of joking is some truth, he is very humble, will listen.

Privately we call him "Prince Yan." He likes to bicker with me, I said: "You dare na! Dare 太岁头上动土!" (Chinese Saying that means : You'll be beset with Difficulties). One time we deliberately cut the same hairstyle, and then swap roles, I am in role of Aaron said: "Chen Hua Sun, help me get hold of hair! "I teased him:" How can you be at this age so young and very easy! you are so lazy, and so dark, I look so white! "she said, but response is so slow that I was often stunned, and then we both laugh in end. In fact, he wanted to respond quickly with my quarrel.

Filial Maturity , Seriousness comparable to Jolin Tsai.
Fahrenheit in total four people, in fact the other three looked very mature, he is the only one a little baby faced, a long time before that he was quite a big man.

Every time I take a pile of clothes to go to them, other people being very busy came up to me, only he never rob on, sitting next to said: "I picked a little later again, you will help me stay . "

In addition to sensible, Aaron is also very filial. He recently bought a big house, moved there, willing to live with his parents and sister.

We are always looking for something different in private restaurants to eat, hot pot, dishes and other occasions will be open to, and sometimes found ourselves sitting next to a bunch of people around to say "yeah Aaron, Aaron yeah!" We still eat there, all kinds of photo clicking and signature and hospitality environment.

He has a very serious attitude towards work. Before Concerts, most artists, particularly large number will say, "My clothes will not wait for the next hook to ah?" "Well will this shape be OK?" "Can't you go through another look here?" Some small concerts, we give him chance to do modeling, but he do not care about his appearance, he would be more focused in the side of the piano tuning and practice. In addition to Jolin, he is the second I saw that definitely seems to be like artists.

Good face, and the first solo.
Usually, Aaron is really messed up, must take extreme care, with the nature of the people hopping. So he often woke up on the plane photographed, Alice hair like photos, messy hair, when squeezed by hand will not know. Sometimes we go out with him, we will found his clothes of two days ago lying in the room.

The other side, Aaron Yan is super good strong. He is the youngest of the "Fahrenheit" made the first solo singles, he can not lose in the face on that. We go out to party, he always rushing first to pay. Last time my birthday, Huang Xiaoming gave me a watch, Aaron said, "I have to send a larger gift than this."

Some activities are sometimes modest budget, like when he comes for my help, I said okay, ah, but after that Aaron will try to pay back, such having a meal with you, send a gift or something. He does not like less human, really very sensible, very intimate.

But sometimes young people, are inevitably a bit hot tempered. He was straightforwardly interested in the record . His staff was rude, he was no matter what the title stand out shout, and was the loudest that we often said to him: "hey, try to be cool ah! I want you forbearance and tolerance , let other people deal with like it! "

His character is really a lot of face. Just solo, when Aaron told me that felt a little lonely. I told him, you came to power, as Big East, as Wu Zun, they are doing Good! Recently, Aaron was quite busy, do not love anything, but that tiredness will discharge his eyes , that were absolutely considered "Killer
."

Recently, appeared at "Dance General Assembly" with black suit and boots , handsome appearance. As guest performer he sang "Suddenly" and dance like a Modern day Performance.
